RECAP: Fifth Session of the State FFA Leadership Conference

Session Five, “Beyond the Horizon,” brought energy and anticipation to the afternoon as members gathered for another impactful session at the 2026 California FFA State Leadership Conference.

State FFA Officers Lily Vaughan, Tessa Camacho, and Sophia Camou chaired the session, opening with ceremonies that set the tone for reflection, recognition, and looking ahead to the future.

Members first heard remarks from State FFA Advisor Mrs. Jill Sperling, who spoke on the value of mentorship and the lasting impact of those who invest in others. She shared, “A true mentor doesn’t disappear over time; they grow with you,” and reminded members that “we’re all here because somebody believed in us, encouraged us, and invested in us.” She also introduced new regional leadership, including Carrie Philips as Central Region Advisor and Kelley Brackett as Superior Region Advisor.

Additionally, Judy Aschwanden, representing the California Agricultural Teachers’ Association (CATA), emphasized the strong support system within agriculture and FFA, reminding members, “Wherever you go in agriculture and FFA, you will be supported.”

The session then transitioned into Proficiency Awards, recognizing excellence in Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) categories, including Fruit and Nut Production through Service Learning, as well as Sheep Production and Wildlife Management. These awards highlighted the continued diversity, innovation, and dedication of FFA members and their projects.

Energy once again filled the arena during the regional competition game, a fast-paced M&M transfer challenge using straws. The South Coast Region claimed the win, earning three points. Central Region maintained the overall lead by one point, with the San Joaquin Region and South Coast Region tied for second.

Members and supporters were also recognized through State Officer Mentor Recognition, honoring those who have guided and supported the current state officer team throughout their year of service.

The session continued with the presentation of National Chapter Awards and the Premier Chapter Promotion Award, celebrating outstanding chapters across the state. Hanford FFA was recognized for Strengthening Agriculture, while Elk Grove FFA earned honors in both Building Communities and Growing Leaders. The Premier Chapter Promotion Award was awarded to Lakeside–El Capitan FFA.

Press Corps members were also recognized for their work in capturing and sharing the story of the conference through their media and photography efforts.

One of the most anticipated moments of the session was the announcement of the Final 12 State Officer Candidates, marking an exciting step in the selection process for the next year’s leadership team.

The session concluded with a heartfelt retiring address from State FFA Secretary Ryan Taylor. Reflecting on his year of service, he encouraged members to look beyond the horizon, embrace growth, and prioritize self-worth, sharing, “In order for ambition to make you happy, you have to love yourself.”

The final pin drop was also announced—a limited-edition “Mooney” pin celebrating Assistant State FFA Advisor Mr. Hugh Mooney. Members were challenged to find a female member of the 2024–2025 State Officer Team in the arena before Session Seven to collect this exclusive pin.

Session Five wrapped up with closing ceremonies, leaving members inspired and looking ahead to the next session at 8:00 p.m.
