QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
Two questions are answered on each E Bulletin. Send them to dunbar@northwest.net.
If questions that were submitted do not appear on an E Bulletin, they
will be answered personally by E mail. All answers are based on the 10th
edition (October, 2000) of Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR).
Q:At a recent contest, a judge asked one of our team members to name
three"unclassified motions." The member could not answer the question
and Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised does not list them. Please
explain what they are.
A:RONR does not currently recognize this class of motions. RONR (10th
ed.), p. 56, l. 1 8. In earlier editions (see1951), unclassified motions
were some of the motions that bring a question again before the
assembly.
Q:Is a "secondary amendment" the same as a "secondary motion"?
A:No. All privileged, incidental, and subsidiary motions are
classified as secondary motions. A secondary amendment is an amendment
to a primary amendment (an amendment to an amendment). RONR (10th ed.),
p. 56, l. 4 6 and p.126, l. 26 28.
TIPS ON TRAINING A TEAM FROM NATIONAL WINNERS:
*Have your team make up MNEMONICS to remember the motions within the
five different classes of motions.
*Build a bank of ORAL QUESTIONS and answers from state and national
contests by placing them on 3 x 5 inch index cards. You can start by
placing the five oral questions listed on this bulletin on index cards!
