State Conference Security Update

April 20, 2017

Dear Advisors, Parents, & Guests;

With the 89th California FFA Convention beginning in a few days in downtown Fresno many of our educators, parents, and administrators may be concerned with events that occurred in Fresno on April 18th.

First, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives. Next, as we plan for the arrival of over 6,500 participants at the convention, it is important to communicate what the city of Fresno has prepared to assure the safety of our participants during the event.

State staff members met on Wednesday April 19th with Fresno’s City Manager, Fresno Police Department representatives, and representatives from the Mayor’s office. The meeting was planned to discuss the incident earlier in the week. Fresno Police will commit additional resources to provide a safe environment for people attending the convention this weekend.

The Fresno Police department plans to use the Downtown Policing Unit, Real-Time Crime Center, Homeless Task Force, Fresno Mounted Police, and Citizen volunteers to create a perimeter around the Convention Center. This unit will proactively make contact with transients and others who may be looking to break the law. Along with downtown patrols, the Fresno Police department has received a list of other hotels in the area where members will be staying and monitor those regularly.

There are common sense measures that each group can take to ensure a safe convention experience. First, all teachers, parents, students, and guests can register for convention mobile alerts through the mobile app at
http://m.calaged.org. Secondly, as is the case in every large city situation, always travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings and report things that seem suspicious.

We are looking forward to a great convention experience. This capstone event for agriculture education will have a record attendance this year, and we are proud of the leadership development, personal growth, and career success opportunities the next four days offer members of the California FFA Association.

We wish you safe travels,

Josiah Mayfield
Assistant State FFA Advisor

We are incredibly thankful to have been given the opportunity to get to know you and we are excited to share your successes and celebrate the journey together.

We will take time to honor individuals who rise above challenges to serve the agriculture industry. Students who soar beyond expectations will be recognized in proficiency, scholarship and CDE areas.

We will hear from our keynote speakers, Keni Thomas and Tim Gabrielson, and visiting national officers, David Townsend and DeShawn Blanding. We will share our retiring addresses and listen to the State Band, State Choir, Talent, and Monday Night Concert.

Finally, we will launch new beginnings as we vote on constitutional amendments that will shape our organization, and elect the 2017-2018 California State FFA Officer Team. We invite you to explore how your involvement in California FFA is Limitless!!
